its free to send, if the reciever has a text package, they just deduct from that.
there is also a service by Teleflip.com that allows you to send a text message to any US number for free by sending an email to areacode-number-number@teleflip.com, (ex. 858-232-6088@teleflip.com). Its Free for upto 5000 messages a month.

Im guessing the e-mail adress aty the end of the phone is for e-mail use. Id rather have the message be a cell phone message. I’ve been using peekamo and it only requires a number and the message rather than the use of e-mail.
